To paraphrase Kermit the Frog: “it’s not easy licensing software.” The implications of what kind of license you use are far and wide: how you choose to share it, use it, and what business model you develop are all impacted.
Add to this the fact that hybrid models exist, along with things like “Widget Frosting” and “Copyleft” and it’s easy to get overwhelmed fast.
The good news is that there are people out there who can not only make sense of this stuff, but help you apply this knowledge to your own project in practical, manageable ways. We’re specifically thinking of Heather Meeker, legal partner at Greenberg Traurig. At this week’s LearnFWD, Heather shared lots of strategies that Open Source projects can take to not only mitigate risk, but position themselves for real growth. It had our teams craving for more.
